Some Bol about Shoaib Mansoor’s Bol

11 Sep

So, I was waiting for Bol for more than one year now. It was owing to “hona tha pyar”, one of my most favourite numbers, and its video containing some key making of the movie, which enticed my concern and kept me glued to TV to come across the date of release of it.

Well, let me be generous; I don’t call it disappointing but frankly speaking, Bol could not Bol (speak) up to my expectations. Some of us (or perhaps most of us, specially women class) are thoroughly admiring this “blockbuster”, but I don’t acquiesce to them.

At first, the way Shoaib sb. has highlighted the obligation of Media in this modern era is really commendable. When we talk about the movie over all, though I liked a lot the theme behind it but dialogues of the movie, were not gripping. Rather when Umaima wrangles with Hakeem sb., the arguments through which she supports her stance about “Rizq” and “Olad”, they can be little annoying to Ulemas (I’m not talking about typical ones). The stance and the gist of these dialogues could have been presented more aptly and in more decent manner, by a writer like Shoaib sb. Besides, the role of Hakeem sb., at some stages, seemed exaggerating. There were some handsome portions in Khuda Ky Leya (film by Shoaib Mansoor) that were acknowledged and given a round of applause by the hall but in Bol, I could not come across a single moment (except in the end). Honestly.

The story of the movie revolves around an issue that definitely needed to be addressed (well, perhaps I’m not supposed to disclose it). Hats off to Shoaib sb for perceiving the idea but it could have been further connected with some other significant factors of the society that were also present in the movie itself and which, perhaps, could have given a more provoking message to viewers. I would like mention the case of “Saifee” (the third creature in the movie), a talented painter. Instead of eliminating the character in the very beginning, had the writer further focused on the matters of this creature, and given a provocative message by making Saifee an achiever of a renowned position (may be a renowned painter) in the society, it would definitely have given a very positive message. And then what about Muslim unity? Discussing the drawbacks of being divided into various sects (through Mahira Khan and Atif Aslam’s part), (not by hurting the sentiments of anyone, of course) and promoting the advantages of being “one” (to compete with the conspiracies against Muslim world) could have been a very good contribution to the society. Ok. Pursuing with three issues in one go might have messed up but at least two of these could have made room easily. Focusing on the very issue of the movie for three hours was not justifiable and “somewhat” boring.

Atif Aslam and Mahira Khan joined in for a very short love story in the movie. It was a pleasant part. I liked it and most probably would be liked by everyone. After all it is all about Atif Aslam and gorgeous looking Mahira Khan. Well Atif, your voice is unique man! No doubt about that. But your acting ummm, sorry to say, you didn’t impress me. You were in sheer dearth of facial expressions! You need to work on it seriously.

Shafqat Cheema as usual gave his best. Excellent acting. Excellent execution of dialogues and excellent get up. Even I noticed the way he had his meal (referring to Pa’ay lapped around his lips), perfectly depicted the type of person he was representing. But I wonder how all the five sisters were chosen. I mean all of them had different “Nain Naqsh” (face etc.). They didn’t seem “sisters” at all. Do they?

Songs. They are good. Hona tha Pyar. Din preshan hai rat bhari hai. Aj Bol do. Dil Janiya. I liked almost all of them. In Hona tha pyar, the female singer was Faiza at first, I remember. I liked her voice in the song more than that of Hadiqa. If you have not listened to in Faiza’s voice, give it a try. Mumkin hai by Jahanzaib, well, it was on an ideal situation. Lyrics were truly supporting it. Thumbs up for that!

So that’s what I have to Bol (speak) about Bol – by Shoaib Mansoor. My opinion is not ultimate, of course. Go and watch and share your Bol experience as well. Cheers!

:-) It wasn’t as impressive as ‘khuday kay liye’, I agree.
Rest is all perfectly described by you. The character of Cheema, extremely well executed. The way he ate :D
but Fd Bhai, i don’t agree when you talked about Atif Aslam. :) He didn’t get much screen time. Mostly, he had the songs. Rest I guess he didn’t get much time for acting and probably that’s the reason why. Like I personally couldn’t judge “Is Atif as good an actor as a singer?” due to the same reason I mentioned.
But I must applaud the movie for its ‘so-close-to-reality’ set up and everything. It was NATURAL and some scenes were a perfect depiction of the way of living of some Pakistanis. At least there wasn’t any silly glamour like the Indian movies :)

the movie lacked focus as u put it,
further atif was just a cherry to lure and nothing else!
movie created interest but just in small bursts not thorough though!

Nice review buddy. I havent seen the movie yet but have read alot about the controversial issues raised by Shoaib sb in that. And I agree he has exaggerated things, both in Khuda K liye and as expected in Bol also. I dont know what the movie would be. I dont expect much about it. :PHence havent been through it. But yes I agree Nice music.

wow.. I agree with everything you’ve written! :) You didn’t mention Iman Ali though.. she deserves a mention, no?
The lack of similarity in the sisters’ features was all too striking. And yes, Umaima’s dialogues and arguments left much to be desired.

Overall a good effort as far as the issues discussed are concerned.. but from Shoaib Mansoor I was expecting more.

    @ All
    Thank you.

    @ Hira
umm shoaib sb k sath jaoon ga gol gapy khany tou chit chat ma zikar karoon ga is bary ma b.
thank you for your generous feedback btw. and yes, do would…after exams. u would have good time, for sure.

    @ Samia

Thank you Samia Khan. :) I came to know that Iman Ali was suffering from fever during the shot. She requested Shoaib sb for a “reshoot”, though was in vain in the end.
However, I personally think Iman’s character needed “verbal expression”… a lil more. bt still. she performed well in her capacity.

agree wid u for most of the analysis. saifee k sath xperimentation ki ja sakti thi… as a great painter wo survive kr sakta tha..bt realisticly sochn itx smthng simply not acptable in our society, jo marzi kr lain itx the truth aur wohi depict krnai ki koshish ki gae hai, ummaima k dialogues vr not that strong halankai she has been shown as playing a very powerful character, argumnts aur strong ho saktay thai,bt i really liked the concept… Moulvi hazraat Islam ki jo galat pictr draw krtay hain( not all of Them ofcrx) Islam waisa nae hai,.. mahira aur atif ki union ka theme acha tha bt maza nae aya screenplay main, bht avrge script tha un ka… kahn kahn movie main bht ambiguity aur unrealistic approach thi, jaisay Emaan ka baby girl return krna aur phr end main jaisay dikhaya hai k wo un k restrnt pay ati hai..i dnt think k real life main aisa ho sakta hai. bt movie main bht achay concpt use kiye gai hain, aur shkat cheema was kamal, i litraly hated him while he was eating, bt he was in full character… hates off !!! starting abi b rahti hai, end wala 1 hr ki movie daikhi hai bx in 3 shifts lol
